Today I was using disk inventory x to see how my new SSD is looking, and I noticed a large 4GB document file called sleepimage.

I googled it, found out what it was, safely deleted it through terminal, and read up about what it is and what it does. Turns out it is supposed to be deleted after the computer wakes up, but obviously its not doing that anymore. I repaired disk permissions and its still not deleting it like it should. If anyone could shed any light onto this i would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance.

I am curious as to why diesel never caught on in the US despite most automakers producing diesel models.

To understand this you would have to go back to the late 1970's when GM introduced the 5.7L V8 Oldsmobile Diesel. In theory the idea was good. Produce an engine that has much better fuel economy, but still has enough torque to pull around a large car. In reality this engine and other GM passenger car diesels are responsible for scaring away generations of Americans from ever owning a diesel car. I don't think you will find many people from 40 years old and up that are not aware of the GM diesel nightmare. To this day the word diesel and passenger car in the same sentence scares them.

Today's diesels are much better and are well engineered and should last much longer then 40-50,000 miles, but something so bad in the past can haunt for years to come.

seems like you have an older calling plan and presumably no smart phone?? If this is the case, you may qualify. Not so sure it is that low cost with people with smart phones.

Wow ... yeah, lack of sleep. I've had an iPhone for the last few years. Make that:

    450 minute plan: $40
    Unlimited Text: $20
    Total: $60 ;)

I was leaving out the data plan on purpose, but wasn't clear. So, hey ... I'll end up saving more money than I thought.

Now, the caveat with this: my FAN discount works on the voice & data plan, but NOT on the messaging ... which means I'll likely lose that part of it, BUT I still end up saving money overall, so I think I'm okay with that.

Those 2600ks are pretty tempting. Was it hard to get to 4.8ghz?

    Ridiculously easy!
I just set the multiplier to 48, core voltage to 1.35, everything else on auto and it just worked!
4.4GHz worked with stock voltages (the chips automatically over-volt themselves up to a point using a dynamic Vid)
I've since had to increase Vcore to 1.37 and Vtt to 1.21 to get the RAM to 1600.

However, i couldn't get any faster without much higher voltages (and heat!) - 4.9GHz required 1.5V. I think later bios versions with PLL over-volting work better, but I'm stuck with the old bios until Gigabyte release a Q-Flash version or I can work out how to do it in Linux.

Most clients are going to want a quote, so that's what you need to give them. However, if a particular client is happy to pay by the hour, you can choose to do it that way too. Whichever way you do it, communication needs to be clear, so the client doesn't get a nasty shock at the end of the job.

When doing a quote, you're really estimating the number of hours it's going to take you anyway. Estimating accurately is hard when you start, but like anything you get better at it the more you do. I actually created a program to help do estimates eventually, because I hated doing it so much, and it saves me a lot of time.

Am I right in saying you've not worked for another design company before? That makes a lot of things hard for you I think, because in working for someone else you get to learn an awful lot that they won't have taught you at the school. Perhaps you're really set on sticking to the plan of going straight into business, but if it were me, I'd want to do at least a year in another design studio before going out on my own. You see how they do things and can adopt the good, and learn from the not-so-good.

Anyway, whichever way you decide to go, I certainly wish you all the best. :)

Hi. Thanks for the advice and kind words. I would actually love to work for a firm or design company. I would prefer the steady check and the opportunity to learn the ropes. I need to network more. I send out a lot of resumes but no real nibbles yet. I think networking and knocking on doors will probably get my farther than the approach I've been using :)

What's in it for me? Seriously, the owner of Macrumors makes $100K plus off this site (so much that he quit his job AS A DOCTOR.) Why should I give blood just to glorify the name of his website & make him richer?

    What's in it for me?

I can't work out if humour was intended with this comment?

You can give blood and not tell anyone about it. Neither you nor MacRumors will get the glory, but you will have that small warm and fuzzy feeling inside. :)

First i would like to say, The family messaging plan does qualify for the needed "messaging plan". Second i have found this to be a great money saver, we were on a 1400 min plan, and were able to drop to the 700 min plan, and still get the same features, but save $20 a month :) Also if you have A list on your 1400 + plan you don't need it because this does cover everyone :). Just thought id share my information, have fun with your new savings!

Coconut Battery says it has a full charge (5020 or something), but the battery only lasts around 3-4 hours. Is this typical? It's got around 950 cycles.

Its only BBC iPlayer and Youtube is better but still glitchy

For iPlayer use iPlayer Grabber ( which will allow you to directly download the streams that you can later delete. Once you have the file on your drive use the G4 optimized Mplayer I created this ( thread to share. Be sure to set the Mplayer preferences the way I show there for best results.

I will look into a tvcatchup solution. Does it use flash? If so then Firefox with the FlashGot extension should do the trick to download them and then use Mplayer like the iPlayer videos.

As for youtube I am shocked you have not heard of Mactubes ( Simply set the player setting in preferences to Quicktime and it will play youtube without even breaking a sweat. The fact that there is no need to go to the site or download the videos first makes it practical and also makes a new user experience without the ads and comments. You can see comments in video info though.

rowlander, you can get compressor to work with more than 1/9th of a core?
That sarcasm is directed at compressor and not at you.

I WISH i could get compressor to work. Oh, sorry....I should clarify, to work beyond 1 frickin' file! If i start a batch, the only thing I'm not sure of is which error I'll get - it's usually 1 of 2.

Yet, I can use Innobits, Bitvice to compress MPEG2 files for DVD (and the ac3s) and well, wouldn't you know, this fine 3rd party apps makes all my cores jump with excitement without me even praying to get on my knees and cry for help :)

I'm a pretty laid back guy, but man compressor just busts my kahonies. Heck, I even emailed Mr. Jobs about it (although nothing back).

And don't even get me started on having to export to QT first. I do not even come close to understanding the logic behind that considering it's their own software!

BUT, compressor is stopping me from upgrading to an 8core so no more money for Apple in that case. No sense spending a few grand on a machine whose potential won't even come close to being tapped.

I don't drink, but feel like I should have one right now.

    ugh :)

Have you configured QMaster? It's a bit of a PITA, but worth it once it starts working.

While much has been made of Android's rapid gains in the smartphone market that has seen it surge past the iPhone, a perhaps equally vocal contingent has pointed out that iOS is much larger than just the iPhone and that Android has only just started pushing into the tablet market and has yet to forge an effort into the non-phone touch device market.

But yesterday, comScore finally put some numbers behind ( that latter argument, building off its earlier report ( regarding February data on smartphone usage to reveal that the overall iOS platform of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch reaches 37.9 million users in the U.S., 59% greater than the reach of Android.Rather than simply counting device sales, comScore's data tracks individual users, making that 37.9 million number reflective of users (some of whom have more than one iOS device) rather than devices directly.

As a result, Apple's iOS reaches 16.2% of the 234 million mobile platform users in the United States, with Android registering at 10.2% with 23.8 million users.

But perhaps most notably, comScore finds that there is not a tremendous amount of overlap in users, with only 10.5% of iOS users accessing the system from multiple devices such as an iPhone and iPad or iPhone and iPod touch.
    Image (

The survey also shows a broad appeal for the iPad, moving well beyond existing iPhone users to appeal to users of smartphones from a number of other companies. In particular, LG, Samsung, and Nokia smartphone users are overrepresented when it comes to iPad ownership, while users of Research in Motion and Motorola smartphones are somewhat underrepresented in iPad ownership. According to the survey, only 27.3% of iPad owners are also iPhone owners, while 17.5% are BlackBerry owners, 14.3% are Samsung owners, and 12.1% are LG owners.

Article Link: iOS Platform Reach Exceeds Android's By 59% in U.S. (

I don't think that they should include the ipod touch. There is no android equivalent. iOS has been out longer too, they will have previous market saturation (android released october 2008 more than a year after iOS). We need to look at the growth numbers.

I like how they can track individual users (scares me).
