This concept might seem alien to a lot of MacRumours users, but being a 'switcher', the method of deleting any app on OS X currently seems very ad hoc. I've been a mac user now for about 4 years and yet the idea of having to delete an app by dragging it to the trash seems very... strange. You never know if you've deleted ALL of that program.

Since trying Mac the past 12 months, the biggest problem I have is that the "drag to trash" is inconsistent, just like the install process!

Half the apps require me to drag to Applications (and drag to trash to uninstall), the other half require me to run the installer, and find the custom uninstaller to remove them.

This is hard to explain to my mother (though thankfully she seldom really needs to install / uninstall apps).

I'm not trying to bash the Zune, but I don't think Microsoft is going to be able to hurt Apple's Market share, it's too late in the market. With Apple having 75% of the market share of the MP3 music players with no sign of it droping.

This is not true at all. Multi-threading often introduces more problems such as race conditions, deadlocks, pipeline starvations, memory leaks, cache coherency problems. Further more, multithreaded apps are harder and take longer to debug. Also, using threads without good reason too is not efficient (context swtiching) and can cause problems (thread priorities) with other apps running. This is because threads can not yield to other threads and block if such an undesirable condition like a deadlock exists.. Like on Windows when one app has a non responsive thread and the whole system hangs.. Or like when Finder sucks and locks everything..

Yes, yes, all true... Somewhat. True in the sense of how a lot of programmers approach current threading problems and various development theories. And we're currently limited by our development tools and the operating systems to a certain degree.

Also, multithreading behaves differently on different platforms with different language environments. Java threading might behave differently than p-threads (C-based) on the same system (OS X).. I am a prfessional developer etc..

Yes, but so many things behave differently from one platform to another. How is writing a low-level thread management system for each platform different than writing the core functions of a 3D graphics engine that can run cross-platform and take advantage of various differences or feature - OpenGL, Direct3D, 3DNow, etc.. Cross-platform development always has its issues as do using different development tools. You obviously know this as do many programmers, so what's the point of the doom and gloom? It's always been this way and is just a part of the development process.

Massively multithreaded apps do exist and have been written for various platforms over the years. Here in Windows and OSX land programmers go into panic mode when multithreading is mentioned. Yet SGI had Irix scaled to 256 CPUs and visulization apps utilizing multithreading on individual systems as well as across cluster nodes and displaying images built by multiple graphics pipes using multithreaded OpenGL that could scale from 1 to 16 graphics pipes and any number of CPUs.

Anyway, my whole point is that the software industry will eventually have to tackle this problem head on and will overcome it. I just don't understand the current resistance and denial exhibited by so many "developers". The hardware is coming, in many situations it's already here... Why fight it? It's time to look at threads in a new light (for many). Upcoming CPU roadmaps place newer quad-core chips in the market in mid '07 with common Xeon and Opteron workstations/servers moving to quad-CPU (16-core) with 45nm process and lower wattage. 8-core CPUs to arrive in '08, 12 and 16 cores per CPU in late '08 or early '09...

MHz isn't increasing and the consumer still wants the next version of their game or video editor to run twice as fast with more features on the new stystem they just bought, which now has 32 cores instead of 18 cores and they'll switch to a competitor's product if you take more than two or three months to ship your software update... What do you do?

Theres movies on Blu-Ray already.. and you can buy discs to burn too already... I think a BTO option is perfectly reasonable.
there are what, about four movies on BluRay? how much do each cost? If there are barely any players, what's the point of blank media? BTW, don't tell me about storage. if you want storage, get a portable 30 GB HD.I'm not saying I don't think BluRay won't be really cool. it'll just be more reasonable come MWSF time.

I think that what iMac_Japan doesn't get is that more people are coming to Apple rather than moving away from the platform, and yes marketshare could be higher, but even though it is what it is, it is still growing, not in total marketshare, but in total number of users, or so I have read in these forums and in various Mac magazines. Apple is one of very few tech companies that are making money and the established base is growing rather than shrinking, despite marketshare. Apple is going to be allright, I think. But that is just my 2 cents.

Is it unusual for Apple to start supporting so many graphics chips in one release?

If it was just to support a new line of iMacs/Mac Pros, they surely would only have 2 or 3 new chips. But 10? Please oh please tell me that with the increasing importance of games to Apple's bottom line, they're starting to take gaming more seriously.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the blind. The Classic is the only iPod (other than the tiny Shuffle) that would be of any use to them. The 128,000 bps that's suicide-inducing for music is (sort of) OK for voice, and 220 GB would hold a LOT of Books on "Tape"Hell, record your lectures too and you could carry a college education in your pocket! I expect quite a negative reaction from handicapped activists if they discontinue the iPod Classic.

Very true. For some, physical keys are essential, and until they create a way to modify the screen to incorporate tactile buttons on demand, there need to be physical key devices out there for those that cannot see. I do think that they will discontinue the use of hard drives sometime soon, though. Flash memory is just the way of the future.

Frankly, they don't give two animal-faecal-secretions about whether you buy it or not.

While you may think your sarcasm-laden post witty, the fact remains that you have not stated any kind of revelation.

They do not care about ONE consumer...but they certainly are going to care about the thousands of units that are being returned and exchanged in hopes of finding one good unit.

I would tell you to review the iPad forum but I have a feeling that message would be lost on somebody so insistent on keeping their head in the sand.

Haven't manufacturers been producing 240-250GB 1.8" iPod sized hard drives for years? I though that was part of the speculation of Apple cutting off the iPod Classics: bigger and bigger hard drives had become available but Apple was no longer updating.

What? The front page article makes it seem like the first time a 1.8" low profile hard drive with capacity over 160GB has been offered.

And there I thought that Microshaft stopped development of Internet Exploder for the Mac because Apple released Safari. Which happened first?

read above- apple released safari first (altho imac_japan will deny that. he denies anything anyone writes except himself). M$ thot that safari was too good for them to be able to compete, so they withdrew. this was plan that was already in motion to remove all stand alone versions of IE (win/mac).

    Well....then Is this the Mac-files ?
    Is there a conspiracy ???

no, but its true! ask most ppl here and they will tell you that. these were also both UK sites, and ive found that (no offense) UK sites dont usually provide an unbiased opinion about apple. IMHO, i think its cuz they're upset that the iPod mini and iTMS haven't been released there yet. :D

Whree is FireWire 800?On the iMac 24". :pAt least two FireWire ports, please. You can buy a FW Hub with 3 or more for $30.And a true 7200 rpm fast drive.Buy a 400GB PATA Drive at Fry's on a holiday for $100 and put it in a $30 FW Case. You can even boot off it by cloning your internal to the outside. What? No Core2 Duo? Why? The Core2 Duo costs the same as the Core Duo, according to Intel's price list. Is there a shortage of the Core2 chips, was Apple committed to purchasing a certain number of Core Duos, or was whoever decided to go with this configuration just temporarily insane?Supply. As soon as there are enough Core 2 Duos coming at Apple to fulfill their needs for the iMacs, MacBook Pros and MacBook then Apple will switch to Merom in the mini I think by Thanksgiving. It's a cool move by Apple 'cause they are immediately offering the speed bumps that they were planning for the Core 2 Duo version now instead of when they switch the chip once they get enough.

I think what you don't realize is that for people who love the iPad either:
    a) They don't need something more powerful, or
    b) They have other devices (laptops, pcs) that do what other things they want to do.

I fit in camp B. I use my iPad for web surfing, reading, sharing pictures, while listening to Pandora. Could I use my laptop for this? Sure I could - Yes. But I enjoy using my iPad for these types of tasks. It's more comfortable using for these tasks, and more enjoyable.

Think about this for a second. Why do you have a toaster? Can't you toast bread in your oven by putting it on broil? A toaster has so few features compared to an oven. What's the use of a toaster? This points out the reasons for an iPad. My 'toaster' isn't my only cooking device in my house, but it complements my stove, just like my iPad complements my laptop.

I signed up to post to MacRumors just now so I could post and let you know your analogy is perfect. Excellent post.

I don't understand this. Apple has carried a 20" monitor as their low end for two years. Why offer something even smaller after so long? This seems like a step backwards.

Exactly, as someone here said earlier, "the 20" is the new 17"
